Hiring temps shouldn’t be taxing

Hiring temps shouldn’t be taxing

It's that time of year when our clients are on the look out for great temps to cover annual leave. We've also noticed a general rise in the number of temps needed across the industry.  We've found that for temp work in particular, the best results always stem from a considered personal approach. Achieving great cultural and personal fit means good outcomes for candidates and businesses alike with great opportunities for individuals and a wealth and breadth of experience in the market place to tap into, not to mention the obvious flexibility that comes with temp work. With that in mind we documented four recent placements and canvassed them for their experience of temp work with RedHat.

Ross
Finance Business Partner, Kantar

What attracted you to this temp role?

Like most permanent candidates I was initially reluctant to explore the temporary market for fear of weakening my CV and limiting my development. When this assignment came up I could see that it was a great opportunity to enhance a particular skill set and would put me in a stronger position to approach a permanent FD role in the future.

Why use RedHat?

The RedHat team understood the reason behind my reluctance so made a specific effort to only keep me abreast of temporary roles that would clearly complement my career path.

What are the benefits of temping?

I’m really enjoying the new role and the challenges it brings. As a temporary role the objectives are clear and I am particularly focussed on driving value for the business.

Payables Supervisor, M&C Saatchi

Why do you hire temp staff?

We have on some occasions used temp staff for short term purposes, especially during busy periods when the team needs a helping hand for a month or so. However, recently the temp staff we have employed have been on longer term contracts and in some cases have turned into permanent roles. I always feel it’s nice for someone to feel an extent of job security even when on a temp contract. The reason we have taken on long term temps over the last year or so is because of a change in finance systems within the company and an extent of uncertainty of resources needed once the new system is up and running.

Why use RedHat?

Because of the longer term contracts we have offered, we have been using the same criteria to hire as we would with a permanent role. Red Hat have been great as they have got to know me and my team’s needs plus the type of personality that works in the team. They know we do not necessarily need to see the most impressive CV (dependant on the role) but that we encourage personality and the ability to fit into a vibrant team as priority, along with the enthusiasm to learn and grow. The recruitment process has always been a pleasure due to how personal the RedHat staff have been, and the fact they listen to our needs and only put forward candidates who fit within those needs. It’s a rarity that we meet someone that doesn’t fulfil the qualities we are looking for and therefore our choice of staff is more difficult (but in a good way) and we can employ with confidence.

Steve
Management Accountant, Adjust Your Set

What attracted you to this temp role?

What attracted me to Adjust Your Set was the fact that this was a small agency that had recently been acquired by a larger group. This meant that there was more scope for me to make a difference as opposed to working for a large organisation where the onus is increasingly on submitting reports to a deadline which I feel I have done my time doing. Also, having worked with the FD in the past, I knew that he would trust me to get on with the role. I am enjoying the role as Adjust Your Set is at an exciting stage of its development.

Why use RedHat?

The recruitment process as always with RedHat was very efficient, professional and went smoothly.

What are the benefits of temping?

I have enjoyed temping for a number of reasons. Firstly the flexibility that temping/contracting gives (currently important in terms of my lifestyle). Secondly, it allows me to broaden my wealth of experience, exposing me to different companies & different ways of working (though I’m surprised at how similar a lot of the processes are). Also, it allows me to wait for the right permanent opportunity. I want my next permanent position to be the right one for me in terms of the role & also the company.

What attracted you to temping?

Initially temping was a way for me to gain entry level experience after I left school. I continued to temp in the television industry for the first few years of my career, which enabled me to climb the career ladder faster than I might have done had I taken on permanent work. I enjoyed the variation of work, encountering new challenges, and I learned a lot from the people that I worked with along the way.

I am currently temping for an online digital marketing agency. I have built them some automated financial reports and have been assisting the Finance Director throughout a transitional period leading up to a department restructure. I am also consulting for a couple of arts charities and building a website for a magician amongst other things...

Why use RedHat?

I initially worked with RedHat as a client when I was a Financial Controller working in theatre. I occasionally required temporary staff when structuring departments and implementing new financial software. Being a smaller boutique agency I found RedHat took the necessary time to understand my needs and consistently introduced the right candidates.

What are the benefits of temping?

I recently set up a small business, took time out to travel, learned to build websites, and worked two seasons teaching children to ice skate. Temping between this offered me the financial freedom and flexibility I needed, while continuing to contain and learn new skills. I find I have become adaptable to fit into resolving challenges to the department and I am able to work flexibly to fit around businesses financial needs.
